Hello! My name is Angela Kovalak. I am a psychologist who specializes in working with individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, relationship and family issues, stress and issues around life transitions. Clients come to work with me because they feel overwhelmed, don’t feel like ‘themselves’, have a sense that something isn’t working, or simply want to make a change. Whatever is motivating you to seek assistance, I can help you identify the obstacles that are impeding your ability to achieve wellness, so that you can move through those difficulties to thrive and feel fulfilled in your life.
I believe that you, as a client, are the expert on yourself and your life. And yet you may find yourself stuck in automatic mode: reliving negative, unhealthy patterns that affect how you feel, your behaviours, and your ability to connect fully with those around you. Having the professional guidance of a psychologist can help you slow down and take notice, develop clearer insight and understanding about yourself and your emotions, and work to break down unhelpful patterns to build better, healthier ways of being.
As a psychologist, my goal is to help you examine and understand the messages you’ve received from your earliest experiences and from others in your most important relationships, and get to the heart of the internalized beliefs that you may have developed about yourself and your life as a result. Often, it is these painful and distressing beliefs that continue to fuel the unhealthy patterns we repeat. As much as the relationships you have with others impact and shape you, the relationship that you now cultivate with yourself in therapy can allow you to feel and think differently about yourself, your life, and those who are important to you.
Creating lasting change for yourself requires moving out of ‘automatic’ mode, which can sometimes be a little intimidating. It involves opening up and taking risks even when it’s scary or uncomfortable to do so. But you don’t have to do this alone! Of utmost importance to me is providing a nonjudgmental, supportive environment for you to feel empowered to challenge yourself and to try out new ways of being. I am committed to bringing authenticity and empathy to our therapeutic relationship and helping you channel the strength and resilience you possess to overcome whatever difficulties you are facing.
I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. I rely primarily on humanistic and cognitive-behavioural frameworks in therapy, but the interventions I incorporate can come from psychodynamic, experiential, and interpersonal approaches in order to meet the needs and goals of each individual client.
I have been practicing in the field of counselling psychology since 2006. I earned a Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology from McGill University, and prior to that, I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Kalamazoo College. Prior to working in private practice, my professional experiences have been primarily in educational settings and non-profit organizations. I am a licensed psychologist with the Order of Psychologists and can provide receipts for insurance purposes.
